Columba 1400
Columba 1400 is an award-winning social enterprise and charity. We help young people and the key adults in their lives to be the change they want to see in the world. We work alongside them as they develop a deeper understanding of their own values, transform their sense of identity, their confidence, and their ambition so they can make a difference to themselves and their community.
We do this through our Young People’s Leadership Academies (YPLA), where we offer young people a safe space to discover the strength they already have inside them and release their full potential – helping them to make positive personal, career and life choices and giving them all equal opportunities for a bright, fulfilling future whatever their circumstances.
Established in 2000, more than 12,000 young people and their key adults have taken part in our values-based leadership academies, which have often proved to be an important turning point in their lives.
What happens at the academies?
Using the framework of our six core values – Awareness, Focus, Creativity, Integrity, Perseverance and Service – we help young people and their key adults to recognise what drives them, what makes them tick, what their values are.
We help them to build their confidence, resilience, outlook, and their leadership skills, so they can build the best futures for themselves.
Who can attend a Young People’s Leadership Academy?
We work alongside secondary schools, councils and organisations throughout Scotland who care about young people, to identify those who would benefit from our academies. We also invite the key adults in their lives to learn alongside them to create a deep, shared understanding.
Where do we work?
Our six-to-nine-month academies take place in three phases:
Phase One: We meet the young people where they are in their communities and online to begin exploring our core values and set our hopes and aims for the leadership academy.
Phase Two: We facilitate a five-day residential at our beautiful leadership centre on the Isle of Skye or, for those who are unable to travel to Skye, we offer a bespoke experience in the community.
Phase Three: A bespoke phase where we support young people to release their potential back into their communities.
