Developing the Young Workforce (DYW)

The Developing the Young Workforce - Scotland's Youth Employment Strategy was published on 15 December 2014: a link to the press release can be found here along with a link to the published document. The strategy sets out the Scottish Government's response to the 39 recommendations in Education Working for All!, the report from the Commission for Developing Scotland's Young Workforce led by Sir Ian Wood.

Developing the Young Workforce programme is a seven year national plan which looks to improve the options on offer for young people, and reduce youth unemployment to levels of the best performing countries in Europe. Throughout the 7 year programme both our Programme Board and National Advisory Group will be key to providing crucial advice on the implementation of our plans.

Skills Investment Plans
Skills Investment Plans (SIPs) describe the skills challenges and opportunities across Scotland’s key sectors. They give a picture of the economic and labour market situation, trends in skills and qualification supply and employers’ perspectives on the big skills issues affecting sector growth. (Recommendations 7, 18). There are now a number of SIPs relating to different key growth sectors including Chemical Sciences, Creative Industries, Construction, Energy, Engineering, Financial Services, ICT & Digital Technologies, Tourism, Life Sciences, Food & Drink and Early Learning & Childcare as well as a Regional plan for Highland & Islands. Information is updated and added to on a regular basis.
Commission on Widening Access
Scottish Government set out its ambition that every child, irrespective of socioeconomic background, should have an equal chance of accessing higher education. This Commission on Widening Access was established to advise Ministers on the steps necessary to achieve this. This final report was published in March 2016.
Highland Skills Assessment Report
The preparation of local authority-specific reports are designed to help support local authorities and partners with skills investment planning by providing local authority level data where this exists. (Recommendation 7, 18)
Working futures – Employment Prospects in the UK – 2014-2024
Working Futures 2014-2024 is the latest in a series of quantitative assessments of the employment prospects in the UK labour market over a 10 year horizon. It presents historical trends and future prospects by sector for the UK and its constituent nations and the English regions. The prime focus of Working Futures is on the demand for skills as measured by employment by occupation and qualification, although the supply side is also considered. Its prime objective is to provide useful labour market information that can help to inform policy development and strategy around skills, careers and employment, for both policy makers and a much wider audience.
Transforming Small Business Engagement with Schools Report
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) in Scotland has been urging schools and the Scottish Government to tap small businesses to boost school pupil's prospects. Its report, 'School Ties: Transforming Small Business Engagement with Schools', reveals that it would be relatively easy to get more firms involved with their local secondary which could reduce youth unemployment and boost pay for young people.
