Community Jobs Scotland

What do we offer?

Community Jobs Scotland (CJS) provides young people living in Scotland with paid jobs in third sector organisations. CJS is a partnership between the Scottish Government, SCVO and Social Enterprise Scotland that creates work opportunities for unemployed young people.

The key purpose of CJS is to support you into sustainable employment by providing meaningful paid work experience in the third sector. However, it also has the dual purpose of increasing the capacity of third sector organisations at a time of increasing demand for support services.

CJS employers must commit to providing a high quality package of support to you. This includes provision of an induction, training, support and supervision, jobsearch support, and an ongoing focus of assisting you into lasting employment.

Who can apply?

CJS jobs are open to young unemployed people living in Scotland. Eligibility is determined by your Jobcentre Plus, Skills Development Scotland or Work Choice adviser. You must have a referral from an adviser before you can apply for a CJS job. Speak to your Job Centre Advisor, if you are registered with the Job Centre, or a Skills Development Scotland Advisor to check the referral process and eligibility. CJS has a number of eligibility strands:
16 – 17 year olds:
  • Currently unemployed
  • Not accessing alternative Government support (e.g. Work Programme or Work Choice)
  • Employability Fund programme participants are eligible to apply for CJS vacancies
18 – 24 year olds:
  • Currently unemployed
  • Not accessing alternative Government support (e.g. Work Programme or Work Choice)
  • Employability Fund programme participants are eligible to apply for CJS vacancies
16 – 29 year olds with a disability or long term health condition
  • Currently unemployed with a disability or health related issue
  • Eligible/suitable for the Work Choice programme or on the Work Choice programme
  • Not accessing alternative Government support (e.g. Work Programme)

16 – 29 year olds with a disability or long term health condition

  • Currently unemployed with a disability or health related issue
  • Not on the Work Programme, Community Work Placement, Work Choice or Specialist Employment Support

16 - 29 year old Early Service Leaver from the Forces

  • have discharged from the Armed Forces having completed less than 4 years of service.
  • be at least one day unemployed
  • not be on the Work Programme, Community Work Placement or Work Choice

16 - 29 year old Care Leaver

  • be a care Leaver or looked after young person or care experienced young person
  • be at least one day unemployed
  • not be on the Work Programme, Community Work Placement or Work Choice

16 - 29 year old Carers

  • be a carer who cares, unpaid for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, mental health problem or an additiction cannot cope without their support
  • be at least one day unemployed
  • not be on the Work Programme, Community Work Placement or Work Choice

What can you achieve?

Our jobs are designed to give you skills and experience that will make your CV stand out. As a CJS employee you will receive a high quality package of support, including an induction, on-the job training, support and supervision, £200 towards training costs, job search support and help with job applications assisting you into lasting employment.

Could I get a training allowance?

You will receive a wage paid at the minimum of the National Minimum Wage. All opportunities offer a minimum of 25 hours of paid work each week, although offering more hours and/or a higher wage rate is encouraged. Opportunities must last a minimum of 26 weeks for 18-19 year olds, or 39 weeks for 16-17 year olds.

You can search our list of current vacancies. If you see something that interests you tell your Jobcentre Plus, Skills Development Scotland or Work Choice adviser. They will be able to check whether you can apply for the job and provide you with a referral.
