Benefits

You may be eligible for certain benefits if you are of working age.  Job Centre plus can provide you with a wide range of information and services, like benefits, loans and grants and help with finding a job. 

The Gov.uk website offers a useful calculation tool for you to be able to find out what type of beneifts you may be entitles to - gov.uk/benefits-calculators 

Listed below are the main benefits and allowances for working age people administered by Job Centre Plus:

  • Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) - a benefit for people who are unemployed and looking for work

  • Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) - financial help if you're unable to work due to illness or disability

  • Income Support (IS) - financial support for people on a low income who are not entitled to claim JSA or ESA

  • Maternity Allowance -  a benefit if you're pregnant or have just had a baby, but are not entitled to Statutory Maternity Benefit

  • Disability Benefits - for advice and guidance about benefits for disabled people and their carers

  • Carer’s Allowance - an allowance when you care for someone who is disabled and in receipt of certain benefits
  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA) - a benefit for disabled children and adults to help with extra costs you may have because you're disabled
  • Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit - a benefit relating to illness or disability caused by an accident or event that happened at work
  • Bereavement Benefits - a range of benefits relating to financial hardship due to the death of a close family member

Social Fund benefits: (You may be eligible if you're on a low-income or certain benefits)

  • Budgeting Loans - loan to purchase important items
  • Complete application form obtained from Job Centre or downloaded from website or speak to an advisor for further information
  • Crisis Loans - loan in an emergency

  • Cold Weather Payments - help with increased heating costs due to 7 days of consecutive cold weather (below zero degrees celcius)
  • Community Care Grants - financial help to live independently
  • Funeral Payments - help with the costs of arranging a funeral
  • Sure Start Maternity Grant -  a one-off payment to help with the costs of maternity and baby items

Application for this requires to be made following appropriate Highland Council and/or NHS assessment for Adult Services and consequent resource allocation procedures.
